Your Path to Healthy Living
and a Healthy Life

Principles of Nutrient Therapy for Brain Longevity

  1. Regular Detoxification and Flushing-Heavy metals, pesticides and chemicals can alter and destroy brain tissue and DNA.  Avoid exposure and do regular holistic cleanses.  In the book, "One Hundred Year Lie", author Randall Fitzgerald, writes about the dangerous levels of toxic chemicals accumulating in our bodies.  Many of these chemicals can cause disruptions in hormonal systems or increase the risk of brain degenerative diseases like Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and ALS.
  2. Take your oils and drink lots of water daily-Consume 1 - 2 Tbsp of pharmaceutical grade fish oil and 6 -8 glasses of water daily.
  3. Eat a low fat/low salt diet-What is good for the heart is good for the brain.  Your arteries need to be clear in order to get oxygen and nutrients to the brain.  Bad fats create blockages and excess salt can cause high blood pressure which can weaken blood vessel walls.  When blockages push against weakened walls, they burst and stroke is the number one cause of adult impairment in North America!
  4. Eat a nutrient dense diet-This makes good common sense for the rest of our bodies but even more sense when we think about feeding and growing our brains.  When faced with the choice of either an apple or a cookie, which one has a greater variety of nutrients?  Eat foods that have the most nutrients.
  5. Ensure your digestion is working properly-If you are not digesting properly, you may not be extracting all the nutrients from your food.  Proper gut health means adequate digestive enzymes, good flora, healthy membranes, optimal absorption and pH balance.
  6. Keep your blood sugars balanced-Your brain’s fuel is glucose, starve it of fuel and it just doesn’t work as well, plus, without fuel neurons die.
  7. Go Low Cal-Calorie restriction has been shown to improve health and improve chances of a longer life.  Don’t go hungry but if you consume a low-fat, nutrient dense diet you won’t be creating as many free radicals.
  8. Take specific nutrients that feed your body and mind -As we age certain body processes don’t work as efficiently.  You can help them out by consuming specific nutrient supplements to help form the building blocks of brain tissue and neurotransmitters, prevent inflammation and remove toxins.  If you have specific brain health concerns please contact Dr. Yim for a complete Brain Fitness Assessment and Treatment Program.
  9. For women, incorporate hormone balancing phytoestrogenic foods-As estrogen levels decline we have a back up system in phytoestrogenic foods.  They include certain herbs and spices, yams, sprouts, soy, flax, fruits and vegetables.  These contain molecules that give a mild estrogenic effect when endogenous estrogen is low and they can block toxic chemicals that might artificially stimulate estrogen . (Ask about the cooking workshop on Ayur Vedic healing using these foods)
  10. Feed your Neurotransmitters-Boost your brain by feeding it nutrients that form neurotransmitters.
