Follow up on the Self Care Alert: Folic Acid In our last bulletin we suggested that many of our subscribers ask their doctors to test their homocysteine levels. We hope you took our suggestion as high levels of homocysteine can be very detrimental to your health. If you have high levels you will need to visit Dr. Yim for a complete health care protocol. One of the most important nutrients he will talk to you about is folic acid or folate. Folic acid, a B vitamin, also known as folate and folicin, is used by the body to synthesize and break down amino acids which are needed to build new cells, especially new red blood cells. It plays a huge role in the prevention of the devastating birth defects, spina bifida and anencephaly. The FDA has even aimed to add this nutrient to enriched flours to ensure pregnant mothers receive sufficient amounts. It also is important in protecting against certain cancers (lung, cervical, colorectal) and coronary heart disease. Those most likely to have a deficiency are alcoholics and those who have suffered illnesses or injuries that require the body to create new cells fast, as in a burn or heavy hemorrhaging, but can even affect those with measles and chicken pox. In each case folacin is used up quickly to manufacture new cells in a hurry. Sources of folic acid are liver, yeast, nuts, dried beans, whole grains, spinach and other dark leafy greens, oranges, asparagus and avocados. Keep in mind that over 50% of folic acid in vegetables is destroyed during cooking. Check Healing Lessons for a great recipe using asparagus!
