The Importance of Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to anemia. This can cause a variety of neuropsychiatric disorders. However, in an American Family Physician article it was also suggested that a vitamin B12 deficiency can be associated with elevated homocysteine levels. This can lead to atherosclerosis.
Vitamin B12 works with folic acid in the synthesis of DNA. It is also involved in:
- protein, fat, and carbohydrate metabolism
- the formation of myelin sheath
- formation of normal red blood cells
- helps iron function better
- promotes absorption of carotene
- and aids folic acid to synthesis choline (important for proper brain function)
Vitamin B12 is created by the action of bacteria metabolism. It's found in animal products like meat, eggs, and dairy products, but it's also found in liver, clams, oysters, and sardines. Vegetarians believe that certain foods like tempeh, miso and seaweed contain B12. Unfortunately, new research suggests that the vitamin B12 found in these foods may not be biologically active in humans. Vegans should supplement their diet with a complex vitamin formula that includes B12 and folic acid.
As we age, our digestive system is less able to process vitamin B12 from food. In seniors, vitamin B12 deficiency is rampant and many individuals may not realize this. They may think the fatigue and soreness that results from a deficiency is caused by age.
Signs and Symptoms
The body stores vitamin B12, but when stores run out the first effects are found in the brain and nervous system. Individuals may experience soreness and weakness in their legs and arms, reduced sensory perception, challenges walking and speaking, memory loss, fatigue, disorientation, and neuritis. Burning mouth has also been linked to a deficiency in B12. As it affects memory and cognition it can mimic the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. Defiencies can also cause depression.
If you are concerned about your vitamin B12 levels see your naturopathic physician about intramuscular B12 supplementation. Getting a quick and painless shot of vitamin B12 bypasses the digestive system. This guarantees 100% absorption and lets the body use the vitamin more efficiently. |
