Homocysteine and Erectile Dysfunction
Forgive me for whipping a hot topic with a wet noodle but...high levels of homocysteine can be damaging your health, shortening your life, and impairing your sex life. We've written on this topic before but our focus was on heart health. With recent research adding to the evils of homocysteine we had to mention it again!
Homocysteine is an amino acid produced in the body. In adequate amounts it is converted to two health promoting compounds called SAMe (S-adensyl methionine) and glutathione. SAMe acts as a natural antidepressant, fights arthritis, and lowers homocysteine levels. Glutathione, works as an antiaging agent and detoxifer. In higher amounts homocysteine increases the risk of:
- Cardiovascular disease
- Alzheimer's
- Diabetes
- Osteoporosis
Homocysteine also has been shown to impact mental development in children.
Last year an unpublished study in Sweden suggested that children between the ages of 9 and 15, with elevated levels of homocysteine may have challenges with neuro-cognitive functions and physical development.
More recently a study from the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism in Dokul Eylul University, Turkey showed that elevated levels of homocysteine may be a contributing factor to erectile dysfunction.
Researchers performed a controlled study with a group of 45 to 55 year old men. The men being studied had no history of diabetes, coronary heart disease, vitamin B12 deficiency or folate deficiency but they did have elevated levels of homocysteine. Their conclusions stated that, "Slightly elevated Hcy levels are significantly related with arterial and probably endothelial dysfunction in patients with ED."
Guys? If you're reading this and your quality of life is being hampered by erectile dysfunction consider looking at your homocysteine levels. Get the levels under control and you may just brighten up your partner,s life!
